Clean Rooms

One of our unique specialties is designing and installing clean rooms with various purposes and customization. Experience, extensive knowledge, and attention to detail make our technicians exceptionally qualified to work on clean room applications. They understand that precision and deep comprehension of specifications are vital for the functionality and general success of these environments.

Clean rooms are among some of our favorite projects to work on. Our proficiency in the clean room niche has even prompted us to travel out of state for projects.

What Is A Clean Room?

Clean rooms are highly controlled environments that maintain a specific contamination level designated by a number of particles per cubic meter.

They obtain a low pollutant count by filtering and eliminating:

  • Dust
  • Airborne microbes
  • Aerosol particles
  • Chemical vapors

There are different classifications for clean rooms depending on how clean they have to be, measured by how many particles there can be of a given size. For instance, less strict clean rooms can’t have flies or bugs, while a super clean room requires people to decontaminate in a pre-chamber and don containment gowns before entering.

A clean room’s primary components are HEPA and ULPA filtration, positive room pressurization, and exhaust systems. Comprehensive knowledge of these functions is essential to maintaining air conditions and keeping a clean environment.

Exhaust Systems

Clean rooms sometimes contain sections called labs where scientists and engineers conduct experiments and work with chemicals. Such activities are typically done inside self-contained hoods and require top-of-the-line exhaust systems to pull dangerous exhaust away from the workers’ faces, keeping them safe. We construct all components for clean rooms, including hoods and exhaust systems, for which reliability is imperative.

Filtration

There are two types of clean rooms designated by their filtration systems:

1. Turbulently Ventilated: Air diffusers in the ceiling provide clean filtered air, while air extracts in the bottom of the walls remove airborne contamination produced by people and machinery inside the room.

2. Unidirectional Flow: High-efficiency filters installed across the entire ceiling or wall provide the room with clean air. Air is swept through the room unidirectionally, eventually exiting through the floor to remove airborne contamination.

Both systems are capable of supplying filtered air to localized areas using devices such as unidirectional benches and isolators. In terms of specific filters, High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are used more generally for larger particles. Ultra-Low Particulate Air (ULPA) filters are utilized when a stricter level of cleanliness is required.

The exact particulate measurement is:

  • HEPA Filtration: Filters out particulates 0.3 microns in size with an efficiency of 99.975%.
  • ULPA Filtration: Filters out particulates 0.12 microns in size with an efficiency of 99.999%.

Darrow technicians are equipped with the knowledge and means to take care of all your clean room requirements, including degrees of filtration, hood and exhaust system installation, and various customizations to accommodate mechanical equipment and additional flexibility.
